Montage Los Cabos: My Review of One of Cabo’s Best Luxury Family Resorts

Montage is the kind of resort that is very easy to settle into. It is spread across 39 acres on Santa Maria Bay, with enormous rooms, some excellent residences and casas, one of Cabo’s few genuinely swimmable beaches, private golf, strong family programming and some of the best resort food I have had in Los Cabos.

Why I Like Montage Los Cabos for Families

Cabo has an unusually deep bench of excellent luxury resorts, so I am always thinking about the tradeoffs.

Do you want a swimmable beach?

Do you need two queen beds?

Do you want a residence rather than connecting hotel rooms?

Are the kids old enough to actually snorkel, paddleboard and use the ocean?

Does someone want to play golf while everyone else stays at the resort?

Montage checks an unusual number of those boxes at the same time.

I think it works particularly well for families with school-aged children, tweens and teenagers, when a swimmable beach becomes a meaningful part of the vacation rather than something everyone simply looks at.

Rooms at Montage Los Cabos

This is one of the resort’s biggest advantages.

Standard guestrooms are approximately 895 square feet, which is enormous for an entry-level hotel room. They all have a balcony or terrace, large marble bathrooms with soaking tubs, separate indoor and outdoor showers, and substantial sitting areas.

For families, pay particular attention to the two-queen categories.

A Coastal View Queen Queen or Deluxe Ocean View Queen Queen has two queen beds and can accommodate up to five people with a rollaway. That means some families of five can legitimately stay in a single room without immediately moving into a suite.

That is surprisingly difficult to find at luxury resorts.

Which View Should You Book?

Room category matters here.

Coastal View looks toward the desert landscape.

Ocean View means a partial ocean view.

Deluxe Ocean View gives you a full ocean view.

There are also versions of many categories with private pools. The guestroom pools are approximately 11.5 by 10 feet and four feet deep, so these are actual small pools rather than decorative plunge tubs.

If the view matters significantly to you, I would book accordingly rather than assuming every room with “Ocean View” in the name is going to feel oceanfront.

Suites for Families

Montage also has some very useful two-bedroom suites.

The Ocean View Two Bedroom Suite combines a one-bedroom suite with a connecting two-queen room. It is approximately 2,540 square feet, has one king plus two queens, and can accommodate up to eight guests.

There are also upgraded two-bedroom categories with pools and better ocean positions, including the Ocean Front Two Bedroom Suite with Pool, which is around 2,700 square feet.

For families who want hotel service and two real bedrooms but do not need a full kitchen or laundry room, I would price these against the residences.

Montage Residences

The residences are one of the strongest reasons to consider Montage for a longer family or multigenerational trip.

A two-bedroom Ocean View Residence is roughly 3,752 square feet and includes a chef’s kitchen, separate living and dining areas, a large terrace, outdoor kitchen and grill, laundry, three bathrooms and a personal Montage Host. Golf-cart service runs 24 hours between the hillside residences and the main resort.

There are multiple bedding configurations, including residences with kings, queen beds and bunk setups.

One important piece of booking intel:

The residences are hillside.

An Ocean View Residence can have a lovely partial ocean view, but it is not the same thing as being directly on the beach. If being front-row to the water is your priority, make sure you are looking at the exact location and category rather than booking based on the words “Ocean View.”

Casas for Larger Families

For a major multigenerational trip, Montage also has four- and five-bedroom casas.

Casa Twin Dolphin has four bedrooms, while Casa Cardon and Casa Santa Maria have five. These are full private homes rather than oversized hotel suites.

Casa Cardon, for example, is over 10,000 square feet, sleeps up to 12 and includes a private infinity pool, full kitchen, butler service and breakfast prepared in the residence.

This is obviously a very different price category, but for several generations traveling together or a family celebration, the product is excellent.

Santa Maria Bay: The Beach Is a Major Reason to Stay Here

Montage sits directly on Santa Maria Bay, one of the relatively few resort beaches in Los Cabos where swimming and snorkeling are routinely possible. The resort has direct access to swimming, diving and snorkeling from the bay.

I would add one caveat for families.

The water here has a much faster drop-off and can feel rougher than Chileno Bay or Pelican Beach at One&Only Palmilla.

During the first day of my August stay, there was weather offshore and the water was rough enough that even as a very confident swimmer, I did not feel comfortable getting in.

Conditions improved considerably after that.

So yes, this is absolutely a swimmable Cabo beach. I just would not describe it as a shallow toddler beach.

For confident swimmers, older children and teenagers, it is fantastic.

You can snorkel directly from shore, paddleboard, kayak and actually use the ocean as part of the vacation.

Paintbox Kids Club

Montage’s children’s program is called Paintbox.

It is designed for children ages 5 to 12 and offers half-day and full-day programming with crafts, games, movies, beach activities and Baja-inspired programming. The resort also offers Children’s Night Out and family activities such as sunset s’mores.

I think this age range tells you something about who the resort works particularly well for.

This is less about putting a toddler in childcare and more about having children who are old enough to independently enjoy activities, spend time at Paintbox, snorkel, swim and participate in what the resort offers.

Pools

There are multiple pool environments, including a main family-friendly resort pool, an adults-only infinity pool and the outdoor Serenity Pool at Spa Montage.

That separation works well.

Families do not feel relegated to one corner of the resort, while couples and adults who want a quieter pool still have somewhere to go.

Between the pools and Santa Maria Bay, this is a resort where water genuinely becomes part of the day rather than just scenery.

Golf at Twin Dolphin

Golf is another meaningful advantage.

Montage guests have access to Twin Dolphin Club, with a private 19-hole course designed to work for different skill levels, with wide fairways, elevation changes and ocean views. Hotel guest green fees currently include a cart, caddie and practice facilities.

This makes Montage particularly appealing when one or two people in a family care a lot about golf and everyone else does not.

They can go play a serious course without the entire vacation needing to become a golf trip.

Food at Montage Los Cabos

The food was one of the biggest surprises for me.

Cabo has plenty of luxury resorts where the hotel is excellent and the food is perfectly fine.

I thought Montage was better than that.

The main dining options currently include Mezcal, Marea, Talay, the Sushi Bar and Paletas, plus 24-hour in-room dining.

Mezcal

Mezcal is the resort’s more polished Mexican restaurant, with modern interpretations of regional Mexican cooking and a strong emphasis on local seafood and ingredients.

I had an excellent meal here.

Talay

Talay was probably my favorite.

It is an outdoor Thai restaurant inspired by Thailand’s food-truck culture, with curries, grilled dishes, dumplings and family-style options. The kitchen can also adjust spice levels, which makes it considerably easier with children than “Thai restaurant at a luxury resort” might suggest.

I would happily eat here even if I were not staying at the hotel.

Marea

Marea sits directly along Santa Maria Bay.

By day it serves Baja-inspired food, while dinner focuses more on seafood and aged meats. There is also a small open-air sushi bar.

Paletas

Paletas is the café and marketplace.

Coffee, pastries, sandwiches, grab-and-go items and Mexican paletas make it an extremely useful stop with kids. It opens early, which I always appreciate at a family resort.

Overall, I thought the food program was one of Montage’s strongest attributes.

You can stay here for a week without feeling like you need to leave simply because everyone is tired of the hotel restaurants.

Spa Montage

Spa Montage is approximately 40,000 square feet, which makes it a substantial resort spa rather than a small treatment facility tucked into the hotel.

There is also a dedicated outdoor Serenity Pool.

For multigenerational trips, I like resorts where adults can disappear to a real spa or golf course while the kids are at Paintbox or the beach. Montage has enough infrastructure that different people can spend part of the day doing completely different things and easily come back together.

The Overall Vibe

Montage feels relaxed, polished and residential.

It does not have the hushed romance of Las Ventanas or the same social energy as Chileno Bay.

What it does particularly well is make a longer resort stay feel easy.

You have space.

You have a beach you can use.

You have enough restaurants.

You have golf.

You have a kids program.

You have residences if everyone needs to spread out.

And the service during my stay was consistently warm and efficient.

That combination is what made the resort click for me.

Montage Los Cabos vs. Chileno Bay

This is probably the closest comparison.

Both attract a similar luxury clientele. Both work very well for families. Both have excellent residences and both sit on swimmable bays.

The difference is more about atmosphere.

Chileno Bay feels brighter, livelier and a little more social. Montage feels calmer and more grounded.

I would also give Montage the advantage if room size or private golf is especially important.

For very young children, I prefer the gentler beach entry at Chileno.

For school-aged children who are confident swimmers, Montage becomes much more compelling.

Montage Los Cabos vs. Four Seasons Cabo Del Sol

Four Seasons Cabo Del Sol feels more like a polished, traditional luxury resort.

Montage feels more residential and a little more relaxed.

The biggest practical difference for families is the beach. Montage has Santa Maria Bay, while I would not choose Four Seasons Cabo Del Sol because ocean swimming is a priority.

Four Seasons is excellent with younger children. Montage gets more interesting as children become old enough to snorkel, kayak, play golf or independently participate in the resort’s programming.

Who Montage Los Cabos Is For

• Families with school-aged children and teenagers.

• Confident swimmers who will actually use the beach.

• Multigenerational groups that need residences or casas.

• Golfers who want access to Twin Dolphin.

• Families of five who want a two-queen room.

• Travelers who care about strong resort dining.

• Couples who prefer a relaxed resort over a social scene.

• Guests planning to spend most of the trip on property.

Who Montage Los Cabos Is Not For

• Families who need a very shallow toddler beach.

• Travelers who want to walk into Cabo San Lucas.

• Guests looking for a lively nightlife scene.

• Couples specifically seeking an adults-only atmosphere.

• Anyone expecting every “Ocean View” residence to be beachfront.

• Travelers who want the resort experience built around one marquee feature.

Is Montage Los Cabos Worth It for Families?

For the right family, yes.

What I like about Montage is that there are relatively few compromises.

A genuinely usable beach, 895-square-foot standard rooms, two-queen configurations, excellent residences, strong food, golf and real programming for older children are all things I regularly look for when booking luxury family trips.

Finding all of them at the same resort is less common.

I would particularly consider Montage for a family spending five to seven nights in Cabo, where the quality of the room, restaurants and activities matters more than it might on a quick weekend trip.

I would absolutely come back with my own family.

Booking Montage Los Cabos

Montage regularly has packages and seasonal offers worth comparing rather than simply booking the first available rate.

As of August 2026, the resort is advertising a complimentary fourth night package that also includes a $70 daily breakfast credit and round-trip airport transfers on qualifying stays. Offers change, so what makes sense depends on your exact dates and room category.

If you are considering Montage Los Cabos with kids, I can compare the available rates and offers and, more importantly, help determine which room, suite or residence actually makes sense for your family.

That matters here.

A family of five may be perfectly comfortable in one 895-square-foot two-queen room. Another family may be better off in a connecting two-bedroom suite. A multigenerational group may get substantially more out of a residence or casa.

And if the ocean view is important to you, I want to make sure you are booking the category that delivers the view you are picturing.
